#12 Photo blog: York, December 2025

Recently I went to York for Christmas weekend getaway. It was also a nice opportunity to take some pictures, although, I found it difficult to take Christmasy pictures in York City due to the number of people there. Here are some that I thought were nice.

On the walk into town, we passed this garage with retro colours. I wanted to try get that pastelly/dreamy look I see in photos by people like James Popsys. I think I managed it a bit after adding more brightness to the picture using Snapseed. I think if I wanted to achieve this more in camera, I should have increased the exposure compensation a bit to wash out the sky. I think I could have cropped out the cars on the right also but I didn’t have a zoom lens with me and it would have involved walking into the road.

As we continued to walk into town, we stumbled across the starts of a Krampus parade. The people were dressed as these monsters, I liked this picture because the Krampus is looking at me and is framed by the colourful Internet boxes.

Later that day, we went to Castle Howard for their Christmas event. This year it was a Wizard of Oz theme, I liked this arrangement of the scared lion in a stately bed.

After seeing all the Christmas displays inside, we were treated to a emerald lit Castle Howard, I guess to go with the theme of the Emerald City from the Wizard of Oz.

On the way out of Castle Howard, my wife pointed out the mini train carrying people. It turned out to be a nice photo too. With these darker photos, I found I had to drop the exposure compensation on my camera about 1 stop.
